The new design of their Forex platform shines through an intuitive navigation and easy to use call to actions which were developed through deep preliminary analysis, definition of persona types, user research and testing, this was all synthesized by close collaboration with the client at every stage.
The developmental milestones of the trading platform were:
The journey began in 2013 with a series of workshops where we were allowed to observe user behaviour and interact with the key users of the existing platform. In close collaboration with their Business Analyst we were given a privileged first hand experience of life on the trading floor. This experience provided an in depth insight into understanding the purpose and expectations from the business users as well as how and why applications were used. In the final stages of this preliminary analysis was an investigation of competitor’s applications. The concluding step was to challenge our findings with the business users through some interviews, thus gathering and combining all the information needed.
Based on this preliminary work the UX phase started at the beginning of 2014 where together with Zürcher Kantonalbank and external resources in order to provide better results on this part of the job, we defined the persona types and started to protoype the new trading platform. The prototype was created as a HTML click through application. The purpose of the protoype was two-fold, one was to gain insights into how the identified personas would use the application, the second was to provide the Zürcher Kantonalbank backend team with a model to begin development without awaiting design or stylesheets. Business users were observed using the prototype, this was especially important to note the user behaviour, for example where users were clicking within the prototype. Once these observations with key personas were complete and the prototype updated, the design phase could begin as well as the backend sprints.
During the design phase there were always opportunities to make minor improvements to the original prototype. The goal of the design phase was to enhance and ensure the existing corporate identity of Zürcher Kantonalbank remained present in the new trading platform. Keeping precision, functionality and usability in mind, the new user interface began to take shape. Through many iterations and interactions with both the Business Analyst and Business Users, key elements of the trading platform were finalised.
Towards the end of 2014 the Frontend implementation phase could begin. The partnership with the IT team at Zürcher Kantonalbank began to blossom, the architecture of the code structure was agreed upon and the existing online styleguide was thus taken and adapted to ensure it was modularised in a way to ensure that everyone could work efficiently and effectively. Elements from the existing styleguide were reused where possible whilst the new elements were integrated in a sustainable approach.
In the final steps of the integration and in the phase leading towards the launch dates, the workshops with the IT team at Zürcher Kantonalbank began to intensify. The truly underlined the iterative approach on development, whilst incorporating or adapting designs where necessary. The workshops ensured that both parties could work in a productive manner without making compromises on quality. These iterations went on until beginning of 2015, where the HTML / CSS templates from the online styleguide were integrated by the IT team of the Zürcher Kantonalbank in the final trading platform.
Throughout this process and in depth analysis, we were able to create the design of a highly usable trading platform which meets different user needs. Since the release, the platform has received very positive feedback from its users. The forex trading platform has proven to be a valuable tool for the clients of Zürcher Kantonalbank.
