Usability was the keyword for the site's visual design, which needs to work equally well for a vast range of customers, from the most diffident to the most experienced web users. The fresh, dynamic layout is as easy to scan and understand as possible..

The site's aesthetics have been placed in service of its functionality, in a design where form follows function and supports the user in achieving their goals. The new Zahlungsassistent allows for very simple and quick payments based on user data and intelligent algorithms.

The website main features are:

  • Fully responsive
  • Online Styleguide
  • Blazing fast
  • Accessibility WCAG 2.0 Level A
  • Keyboard navigation

The eBanking application has been developed for and with its users, at all stages of the project. The conceptual design is based on vast user studies collecting needs, goals and pain-points of electronic banking. The study results applied to a set of personas representing the heterogeneous user group. Walkthroughs and usability tests with users were conducted by business engineers of Zürcher Kantonalbank. Our UX team worked closely with Zürcher Kantonalbank through numerous cycles of development and testing to ensure that the bank would deliver a product that could meet the standards we set for it.

The site conforms to WCAG standards, guaranteeing accessibility. Achieving this involved for example considerable attention to the JavaScript technology used, providing keyboard navigation throughout the site, making assessments of contrast ratios, and so on.

The site's frontend is developed through Divio's interactive styleguide, itself a cutting-edge application created in Flask, a Python-based web application micro-framework, and emplying extensive custom object-oriented JavaScript libraries.

The styleguide defines key aspects of the user experience, and is logically decoupled from Zürcher Kantonalbank's application architecture, but integrated into the development process. This makes possible wholly independent development of both and guarantees the integrity of the visual and interface design.

The launch of the new eBanking has received very positive feedback from its users. In written testimonials, its visual design and improved structure as well as innovative functionality such as the Zahlungsassistent have garnered numerous compliments. One of the most important channels for retail customers of Zürcher Kantonalbank has thus become significantly more attractive to them, and has raised satisfaction levels.
